About this deal

I didn’t want the day to pass without mentioning the sad death of Keith Floyd. Keith Floyd’s Floyd on France was the first recipe book I ever bought (and I own a few!) and I think his TV programme which accompanied the book was probably the first cookery programme I ever watched. To me his was an inspiration, a proper cook who always had a nice glass of wine to hand and gave the impression of cooking by feel, with a splash and a dash of this and that, rather than confining himself to strict measurements. He clearly loved food and absolutely adored what he did. Despite his splash and dash approach his recipes are always very clear, to the point and easy-to-follow, avoiding the wordy waffle you get in some cookbooks. I still remember making his unbelievably delicious pate de truites for the first dinner I cooked my parents in my first flat- a layered pate of trout and salmon with Moselle wine, fragrant fresh herbs like chervil and parsley, eggs and cream, all wrapped in flaky pastry and served with a butter sauce. Just gorgeous….but definitely for a treat only as, unfortunately, it is absolutely stuffed with saturated fat! I've been invited onto Radio Bristol's Dinner party Hour on Saturday morning (9-10 if anyone's interested!). I've got to choose 4 people, dead or alive, that I'd like to invite to dinner, what I'd serve to eat and drink and what music I'd play. Of course, Haile Gebrselassie has to be up there amongst my favorites. I think he might be a vegetarian so I'll have to have a think about something delicious for him, or maybe even try out some Teff, an ethiopian grain which is rich in minerals and which the great Haile says contributes to the success of ethiopian runners (along with genes, poverty and sheer determination). Haile Gebrselassie runs with a crooked arm, which is apparently due to the fact that he spent his childhood running 10km to and from school, carrying his books under his arm. Omega 3 fatty acids are found in oily fish, nuts, seeds and vegetable oils. They not only provide fantastic energy, but according to numerous studies carried out over the past ten years, a diet rich in omega-3’s can play a role in improving mood and brain development. I’m not suggesting fish for breakfast (although Usain Bolt is famed for eating a saltfish stew for breakfast, and, as a child, I was treated to sardines on toast for breakfast at least once a week!), but here are a few suggestions to boost your child’s intake of healthy fats at breakfast time: Really nice and interesting blog. I've added it to my favourites as I fancy trying out some of the delicious sounding recipes."

yoghurt sauce - mix a pinch of salt, pinch of sugar, pinch of chilli powder, pinch of coriander or ras-el-hanout spice mix into about 5 tablespoons natural yoghurt waxy potatoes - they must be waxy ones or the dish won't work - I used pink firs, which I just washed and didn't bother peeling and cut into long halves or quarters depending on their size This is not just for breakfast! Let kids munch on a bowl of Maple and Almond Crisp while they do their homework. As a fairly lean runner, I don't really have much of a problem in the muscle tone and fat burn department, but my incredibly active cyclist/kayaking mother-in-law (or, as some say, "extreme grannie"), absolutely swears by these shoes. What they don't mention in the promotional information is that I think you can actually walk further before your legs start to feel tired. This is really important for me - after a 10 mile run sometimes the thought of walking the 3 mile round trip to school to collect my children seems rather daunting....but not with my new Shape Ups!

This is especially true when you’re buying products like Nutrition. On Sunday, Mark took hold of my book and cooked up some of my American Blueberry Pancakes which he served up as a late breakfast with maple syrup and some crispy bacon...yes, the kids are away!! He misread the abbreviation 2 tsp as 2 tablespoons - of baking powder (!)- but I managed to thwart his attempts at sabotaging my recipe and the end result was completely delicious. We were nicely stoked up for our cycle along the Bristol to Bath railway path for lunch with our lovely friends there. Door to door is only about 20 miles but the rain was torrential from start to finish and what is normally a gorgeous cycle ride was pretty unpleasant really! Porridge with milk, nuts and fruit (see recipe for Porridge with Bananas, Toasted Walnuts and Maple Syrup) When the pilau is cooked, add the fresh coriander and the slices of chilli and serve with the cutlets and the yoghurt sauce.
