About this deal

The other components are limited to cardboard coins and upgrade tokens, with wooden coal cubes, steel bars and yellow drums of oil. Engine builders are popular for this reason, but often the mechanism is buried within a much more complex rule structure or mixed in with other mechanisms. It takes a lot of work to sort out your engine, often you’re performing several conversion actions for small gains.

The art is great across all the components, echoing the technical illustrations of the era in which it is set. Purchase new production facilities and upgrade them to extract and process your resources in the most effective way and the title of the wealthiest capitalist of the technological revolution will be yours! The compensation you get is multiplied by the disc you used, so if your 3-disc was outbid by someone’s 4, you’ll get 3x the resources or get to perform that transformation 3 times. With a character and a starting factory, each player takes four bidding disks worth one, two, three and four respectively. When the auction ends, whoever has the highest numbered disc wins the company card and adds it to their tableau. It doesn't only matter what your optimal play is; what matters is that your play, whatever it is, is better than that of your opponents. It is linked to Set-Collection, Hand-Management, Tableau building, and in a way Tech-Trees too; some of which are present in this game as well.

The catch is that in Furnace, if you lose an auction you get compensated, either with raw materials or the chance to exchange some for a different type. That said, it’s also a very relatable theme and it does fit with the production chain mechanism that is already tough to think through without having to also consider a more abstract concept. When it comes to resolving the end of the auction, before the red player takes that factory, the yellow player will be compensated three times. Of course, while it’s tempting to use your bids to screw up other players’ plans, you also need to get your own supply chain running. It may be that you need a particular resource before you can achieve a certain goal, and that first resource you need will be made available to you by one of your other cards. Each company card gives the player a resource(s) or allows them to convert resources in a number of ways. I enjoyed the asymmetry between the different Capitalists and how they require different approaches. The components are decent without being amazing, and the box is perhaps a bit bigger than it should be whilst also still being small enough to fit in a rucksack or hand-luggage style case. Acquire new production facilities and strive to upgrade them to extract and process your resources in the most efficient way you can.

In addition to the three core resources, coal, iron, and oil, there’s a fourth more abstract quantity -- upgrade tokens. If you want to win the game, it is imperative to know what your opponents are building, how they utilize their resources, what their potential combos are, and what Companies they need to bid on during the next Auction. First, they provide you with either a resource or convert one resource type into another during the production phase.

Each card has one or more icons along the top, some very serious industrial artwork in the middle, and then an operation action at the bottom. However, I also found that the variable bidding disc was the main thing that added a considerable amount of analysis paralysis, even for seasoned players, and greatly extended the game length. Let’s say yellow now places their three-value disk onto the same factory, knowing they will not be able to win it. Furnace also includes capitalist cards that contain unique effects, and if you want, you can choose to deal one out to each player at the start of the game.Take two well-known design principles, insert a twist, create an immersive yet easy-going and fast gameplay, and you might as well be looking at gaming's next big thing.
