About this deal

It has all the elements of a great story with interesting and dynamic characters, humor, a revenge plot, and plenty of tense moments. The oh-so-correctly worded and printed invitation to an opulent masquerade ball at the recently inherited and ridiculously opulent Park Lane mansion of the wealthy Miss de Vries. This book takes us into the fascinating and complex world of the turn of the 20th century and the backdrop most certainly includes the dichotomy of the upstairs and downstairs personas. Abbott’s novel centres on a pregnant junior-school teacher, Jacy, who travels from New York with her husband, Jed, to visit her father-in-law in remote upper Michigan.

Book review of The Housekeepers by Alex Hay - BookPage

When Mrs King, housekeeper to the most illustrious home in Mayfair, is suddenly dismissed after years of loyal service, she knows just who to recruit to help her take revenge. Agnes is determined to find out what happened and who is to blame when a journalist turns up, asking questions. The ensemble cast of characters were all well written and fabulously multilayered, breathing life and purpose into each of their nuanced (and intricately intertwined) backstories. The novel kept me turning pages to see what obstacles would come in the way and whether they'd pull it off. When Mrs King is suddenly dismissed from her position as housekeeper at the de Vries home, she isn't worried because she has an ace plan up her sleeve.Headline has pre-empted Alex Hay’s "extraordinarily entertaining" debut novel The Housekeepers for a six-figure sum.

King had her own reasons for entering service in this particular household and rising through its ranks.Reminded me of a East End / Whitechapel panto in places but it is worth a wet weekend or beach read. I love the promise he showed in this novel, and I'm sure that with some fine-tuning and experience, he can pen a winner. It took more of a back seat and for all the drama that was in this book, I just didn't care for any of it as I didn't feel like I knew the characters at all to care about any of them. The plot is ridiculous (yes I realize it is fiction, a novel, and a product of the author's mind (perhaps he should look for a day job!
