This black-and-white TV dramatisation is now much less well known than a more lavish 2001 colour version with Daniel Craig playing the part of Crouchback. Each eligible item is clearly marked with the Own Art logo (please bare with us while we implement this). Woodward played the title role in the 1980 Australian biographical film drama Breaker Morant, which was highly acclaimed, and his presence brought the film worldwide attention. When the play reached Broadway in 1963, Noël Coward, who was preparing a musical version of his own wartime success Blithe Spirit, found Woodward's acting "marvellous" and cast him as the husband, Charles Condomine, in High Spirits. A renowned British actor, Edward Woodward won critical acclaim as a stage and television performer, top-selling recording artist and occasional film actor. He went to Broadway with the play the following year and appeared there in two more shows in the mid-60s: High Spirits and The Best Laid Plans. The Wicker Man also starred Christopher Lee, branching out from his performances in Dracula films to play Lord Summerisle, and Britt Ekland as the island's goddess of love deflowering young men. Later in the season, Woodward resumed his full duties and carried the show through a fourth season during 1988-1989.

Winning a scholarship to Rada enabled Woodward to leave the job he had taken in a sanitary engineer's office. Robin Hardy, who directed The Wicker Man, said, "He was one of the greatest actors of his generation, without a doubt, with a broad career on American television, as well as on British film. Edward Woodward would continue the theme of spycraft in the shadows in his 1980s show “The Equalizer” where he helped people the authorities couldn’t.In the early 1960s, he was a jobbing actor who made a number of minor TV appearances in supporting roles. Woodward had a fine tenor voice, appearing on a number of occasions in The Good Old Days and making a dozen LPs.

His vocal ability and acting skill enabled him to make a number of appearances when time allowed on the BBC's Edwardian era music hall programme, The Good Old Days. The film, which co-starred Christopher Lee as the island's formidable lord, had a troubled production and was heavily cut for its release. In 1977, he starred in two series(series is sometimes BrE the AmE seasons) of the BBC2 dystopian drama 1990, about a future Britain lurching into totalitarianism. In 1969 and 1970, he was Television Actor of the Year, and Best Actor at the Sun Awards in 1970, 1971 and 1972.The key to popular success, without sacrificing his family – he had two sons and one daughter by his first wife, Venetia Collett (the actor Venetia Barrett) – seemed to be television. After graduating from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), Woodward began his career on stage, and throughout his career he appeared in productions in both the West End in London and on Broadway in New York.

Photograph: Allstar/Sportsphoto Edward Woodward, left, as the uptight police officer Howie with Christopher Lee as Lord Summerisle in The Wicker Man, 1973. The Equalizer was shown on ITV from 1986 to 1989, with Woodward as a former secret service agent for "The Company" (the CIA) who had turned to working as a private investigator. With this in mind, minor blemishes, surface scratches, manufacturing flaws and a general sense of their age and history are naturally to be expected. The policeman is then placed inside a massive, hollow wicker effigy of a man above the cliffs and the pyre is lit.Other non-musical stage work would include the comedy "The Best Laid Plans," an acclaimed title role in "Cyrano de Bergerac," as well as noble appearances in "The White Devil," "Babes in the Wood" (as Robin Hood), "The Wolf," "The Male of the Species," "The Beggar's Opera" (as Macheath), "Private Lives" and "The Dead Secret. He has been exhibiting as an artist since 2006, with solo shows in London, Portland and Los Angeles and in group shows in Hong Kong, Tokyo, Asbury Park and beyond. Born in Croydon, Surrey, in 1930, the son of a metal worker, Woodward attended the town's Eccleston Road and Sydenham Road Schools, the Elmwood School, Wallingford, Hinchley Wood School and Kingston Commercial School.
