But "Appetite For Destruction" is not just thug lyrics or pose: it's main strength is being approachable in its contrast between layers and layers of big city filth and hints of light in the shape of Slash's clean arpeggios and occasional romanticism which, funny enough given the main album's tone and themes, allowed "Paradise City" and "Sweet Child O' Mine" to become massive commercial hits, propelling the album and the band into the stardom. What grunge would do later with bleak lyrics, irony and nihilism, Axl & Co. did it with street rage, plenty of low-life stories of cheap hoes and booze, a nightmare of endless nights, blurry mornings of constant hangover and dangerous companies. The first variation of the album cover came from Axl Rose. The frontman wanted something as punchy and volatile as the band’s music.
