About this deal

Taking the time to allow the viewer to make emotional bonds with the main characters in their private lives at the beginning of the movie pays off when everyone is on the submarine and everything begins to go wrong. But after equipment malfunctions, a set of explosions rip through the sub, killing the majority of the crew and sending the rest down to the bottom of the Barents Sea. They would have got cold very quickly… a few torches and a handful of blankets wouldn’t keep them warm for very long. As we meet Mikhail and his fellow sailors, they’re preparing for a wedding, a final hurrah before they head undersea for a weapons test. The Kursk submarine disaster that took place in August 2000 in the Barents Sea lasted for several days.

Review: Kursk-The Last Mission - 60 Minutes With

However, on land the Russian authorities are reluctant to accept assistance from foreign vessels much to the frustration of Royal Navy Captain David Russell (Firth). One of the lead men is Captain-lieutenant Mikhail Averin (Matthias Schoenaerts) who tries to galvanise the men and do something himself to try to escape. The most unusual aspect of this film made in English by the Danish director Thomas Vinterberg lies in the fact that its single narrative operates on two distinct levels.

There’s also a strong turn from Colin Firth who plays real-life British commander David Russell whose attempts to help the rescue mission were rejected.

I found myself gripping my seat on more than one occasion as the situation the men found themselves in began to worsen, and I lost count of the number of times I involuntarily held my breath during underwater scenes which were literally a matter of life and death for all involved.
