About this deal

It’s fair to say that a keyboard can grow on you as you get used to it over weeks, months and even years, but you can certainly tell an instrument that doesn’t feel right fairly quickly.

Mechanical keyboards use small mechanical switches to actuate the keystrokes, each key has its own dedicated mechanical switch which allows for a much more tactile feel when typing in comparison to typical keyboards that you're used to. These generally have a shorter travel and a lighter action, which can improve typing speeds when you get used to the overall feel. If you're familiar with linear switches, which are quick but offer little feedback, you'll feel right at home with this keyboard's red switches. It’s surprisingly similar in feel to Apple’s Magic Keyboard, with the additional benefit of slightly raised labels and a concave surface that seem to help your fingertips fall into place.

Above these you have dome-switch keyboards, where the key presses a metal or plastic dome, which creates a connection between two layers of circuit printed on silicone or rubber.

However, making the transition from one type to another can be worth the effort if, for example, you’re finding that using a chiclet keyboard all day is making your wrists ache at night. Unweighted organ/synth keys tend to allow faster passages to be played more easily – essential for some organ and synth solos. The actuation force of a switch is determined by several factors like switch type, spring length, and even the shape of the stem your switches possess. The Asus ROG Azoth, however, is one of the best keyboards for both gaming and typing that we’ve ever used — and we’re pretty impressed that it comes from a mainstream gaming company and not a boutique keyboard supplier.

A 36-month keyboard and 12-month mouse battery life Keyboard and mouse battery life may vary based on user and computing conditions -along with on/off switches—means you can go for months without the hassle of changing batteries. We’ve not used a G80-3000 for more than 15 years but the reworked model certainly felt familiar once we started tapping away on it. I’ve covered some of the basics of improving strength and dexterity and different key weights can certainly play a part in this. These settings don’t change how the keyboard feels, but (in basic terms) they affect how much force is required to play notes across the dynamic volume range from soft to loud.
