About this deal

It goes to that very odd middle eight where it goes to double time, and I was quite concerned about it for a while because you have this great riff and a really cool groove and it was just the right tempo. After that we sent them to GGGarth Richardson who also turned us down, and we asked Terry Date who said he’d do it for a quarter of a million dollars. According to one of the catering staff who’d been there for years, I was staying in the same room that Morrissey had. I feel that way about Troublegum; all the songs on it are amazing and it changed so many people’s lives.

Its repeated refrain – ‘Going nowhere’– struck a universal chord and Nowhere became the soundtrack to metal and indie club nights up and down the country. We are actually from East Antrim and we all lived 12 to 14 miles from Belfast and we moved to Belfast when the band formed but it was East Antrim and places like Ballyclaire and Larne that were our background, places that were like redneck America .The outro is still the same, although the outro on Troublegum isn't as Butthole Surfers as outro on the original demo was. The whole album happened so effortlessly and easily, and everyone was in a really great mood and the sound that we wanted was there.

The next day we found a dictaphone that Michael used to carry around for ideas and it had recorded the entire argument back at rehearsal room; it had been sitting on top of an amplifier and when we came back it switched itself on.

The following year saw the release of the So Much for the Ten Year Plan: A Retrospective 1990–2000 album which (in title at least) was a self-deprecating poke at the bands' difficulties with corporate rock in recent years.

Andy: In recent years Joy Division has been retrospectively analysed, but I think we were still close enough to the original time.

When we did Castle Donnington in 1994 we were being taken to the side by lots of people in the metal press who were saying to us that this could go horribly wrong. I think what I like about this record is that it might not have any of our better known songs on it, but it’s got a uniformity that I think all good albums should have. Influenced by Nick Cave, Tindersticks, Afghan Whigs and the 4AD roster, Infernal Love's guitars are cleaner, Cairns' vocals are at their croonsome peak, there is plenty of cello (provided by This Mortal Coil's Martin McCarrick) and even a saxophone.
