About this deal

Social media, for example, makes money when it has our attention. And it does that by appealing to outrage, which drives us apart and harms democratic institutions and norms in the process. In this way, social algorithms inevitably push us to divisive content. This true adventure/survival story was almost as good as Kon-Tiki, but it still gets 5 stars from me and placed into my favorite book shelf as did Kon-Tiki. This book includes conservation efforts, archeological and environmental studies and good old fashioned beachcombing stories. Left with only a sextant, a navigational instrument, and a watch to help her navigate the 1,500 miles to Hilo, Hawaii she suffered not just from hunger but also a head injury and a severely damaged boat. Good survival story. The author had to survive on the open sea for forty-one days after a freak hurricane cripples their boat and her fiancé is swept overboard. The author herself was gravely injured.

Ritter, Doug (2001-11-02), "Equipped to survive – Steven Callahan Bio", equipped.com , retrieved 2007-08-15We also turn founders like Steve Jobs and Elon Musk into cult figures. But their large followings can distract from the actual health of their companies. Also, instead of clear communication about value, some companies indulge in outlandish yogababble – vague pronouncements about how they’re selling a lifestyle or feeling. Or they overpromise, sliding into aspirational claims about what they’re eventually going to achieve.

Well, OK, they also come with a lot of downsides. Nobody asks for a crisis like a global pandemic throwing everything into confusion. But at the same time, risk and instability can actually foster innovation and research. When old ways of doing things fall apart, people come up with new ideas. New and better restaurants may move into a neighborhood to replace failed ones. Tanking rents may not be great news for landlords but they can clear the way for more people to move into an area for job opportunities. This author brings you right along with him and you'll often wonder if you could have survived the journey...or would you have succumbed to the wrath of the sea. I'd like to think I'd have been successful, but in all honesty I'm sure I wouldn't have made it past seven days. I thought this book was fantastic, Tracey Williams writes a fantastic book about the pollution she has witnessed and the culture of beach combing. I was drawn to this book by a YouTube video (that I will link at the bottom) that reveals the extent to which pollution in the sea has an everlasting effect. I was astonished to read that pieces of LEGO from a 1997 derelict were still washing on U.K. shores. Williams isn't necessarily a researcher either which makes this book more accessible to the general audience while still teaching them from the research she did do to write this. While the writing is base level, the book makes up for it with stunning, colorful diagrams and graphics that make you realize just how full the ocean is with human litter from old Monopoly houses to actual artifacts. Your education, whether you earn it from a university or a less traditional venue, is essential. It might take a creative approach but don’t sell yourself short by giving up on the idea – even if it comes with major challenges. Thanks, I'll just add this to the other couple dozen terrifying accounts of sharks from books I've read, and be fearful of swimming in deep ocean water forever.] Anyone battling demons of their own will find solace in Callahan's struggle to survive, which is a metaphor for all mens' struggles to survive an often hostile world with often insurmountable odds.

Between 1965 - 1975 more than 66% of members in Congress served the country in uniform, today its less than 20%—not a surprise here given how dumb US politicians are. One final thought, the author DOESN'T really cover here. He notes that one of the most dangerous trends in America is the growing number of undereducated, lonely, poor, angry and terminally single young men. Well, you know who else has that problem? China - and is this really the situation we want in the world's two superpowers as they edge closer and closer to confrontation? Tami regains consciousness and struggles to understand what has happened. She urgently searches the crippled yacht in hopes of finding Richard and realizes that he was swept overboard. Tami screams in anguish and it is revealed that she is all alone, with no ships or land in sight. Tami finds that the engine will not start, and no one hears her radioed distress calls. She believes she has spotted the lost dinghy with Richard clinging to it, and she tries to steer the yacht towards him. She falls off and nearly drowns as she swims to rescue Richard. After dragging him aboard, Tami realizes that he has broken ribs and a shattered right shin. She fashions a makeshift sail using a broken pole and a storm jib, allowing her to sail toward Hawaii. Yes. Tami and Richard knew a storm was coming, but they didn't know it would be that bad. They tried to outrun Hurricane Raymond by sailing north, battling 140 knot winds and 40-foot waves as they did their best to keep the yacht afloat. The relentless category 4 hurricane showed no signs of calming. It changed direction and stayed on their tail like a predator. -Mirror OnlineThe book is very short and can be read in less than a day, which is also unfortunate. Not many people have experienced what the author went through and I believe her ordeal deserved a more detailed description. Perhaps a ghost writer could have helped this author dig deeper into her mind and soul to better describe the loneliness and desparation of the untenable situation. It felt mean and unnecessary. My feelings were right cause in the end she wrote about his parents who are English....That they were cold because they did not show their emotions in front of her"That pissed me of to no end. I´d wanted to read this book for ages for a mixture of reasons. I like a decent survival story but mainly I am fascinated by the open ocean - the vast, scary scale of it. The idea of falling off a boat and being lost in the middle of that endless blue desert, with all that´s in it and above it, is a thought which fascinates, terrifies and amuses me. So I wanted to read this book to find out what Steven Callahan made of it - after all, he did it. Oh, one more thing. Galloway is a frequent guest on CNN's "Smerconish,” and you (and better yet, your high school children) should watch the below to see him explaining why it is utter bullshit for celebrity commencement speakers to encourage graduates to follow their "passions." Insightful, important stuff to share with your kids...God, I'm in awe of smart people, even if more often than not these days they just depress the hell out of me... A lot of British meanwhile were brought up with the stiff upper lip. You do not show your emotions in public.

The author touches on a variety of topics, such as education, income inequality, healthcare, and more. For each chart, he writes a paragraph or so describing it. I would have preferred a more in-depth look. The world can be full of bad news, but there’s still cause for hope. Because our actions and government policies got us into this fix, that means we as a society can also alter our situation for the better. I would have liked the book better if the author would have described her ordeal more thoroughly, not just about keeping the boat afloat, but how she dealt with the ordeal, both psychologically and emotionally. As the movie isn’t out yet it’s unclear whether Sharp is actually there or a figment of Ashcraft’s imagination.I may be unimproved, but at least I enjoyed an exciting read. Steven Callahan’s story is intrinsically gripping and well-told. We are fortunate that, of all the people who could have been stranded at sea, somebody with a literary bent suffered this fate. For one, he took careful notes during his ordeal, which helps to fill the narrative with fascinating detail. And Callahan does not only narrate his doings; he attempts to capture how his psychological state shifted as the time wore on, and what lessons he drew from the experience. The final effect is a wonderfully immersive book, which evokes both the physical experiences of living in an inflatable dingy (salt sores, hunger, thirst, atrophying muscles, cold and heat) and the mental and emotional tolls that such suffering produces. So in the end she had enough water, and should have had even more—a boat that size must have a few hundred gallons of fresh water. Rich people probably expect to have two fresh water showers a day in such a luxury craft.
