AS Sociology for AQA – The Application of Sociological Research Methods to the Study of Education – This odd little booklet provides a useful overview of the methods used in various studies relevant to different topics within the Education module. Sociology Teaching Resources for Sale the relationship between positivism, interpretivism and sociological methods; the nature of ‘social facts’ Gilbert, Nigel (2015) Researching Social Life – A classic introductory text book which takes you through the research process step by step, from research design, to data collection and analysis. crime control, surveillance, prevention and punishment, victims, and the role of the criminal justice system and other agencies NB I’ve only selected the most quintessentially sociological books for this list (I’ll get round to explaining what I define as ‘quintessentially sociological’ at some point). There is no great mystery about how to study for sociology A-level. Many students, although they’re not naturally that ‘academic’ still score A and A* grades through sheer hard work, focus and determination. Evaluate – HISTORICAL CRITICISM – Is the theory/ concept dated? When was the concept developed? Is it still relevant today, or has society changed so much that it is no longer relevant? Has society changed in such a way that some aspects of the theory are now more relevant? You are competing against people who are going to put in a hell of a lot of hard work so you need to work as hard as or harder than them. And you need to think about what hard work really is. the relationship between different social groups and religious/spiritual organisations and movements, beliefs and practices Even though this is not one of the AQA endorsed text books, the fact that it’s not endorsed probably says more about the AQA than it does about this book.

You might also like these teaching resources for the sociology of education. They are specifically designed for A-level sociology students and consist of several versions of key concepts definitions (80 concepts in total), gapped summary grids with answers covering the entire sociology of education specification and 7 analysis activities. Upon successfully completing this home learning course, you will receive the qualification: AQA A-level Sociology, issued by AQA. Your certificate is identical to that issued to students at any other school, college or university. Evaluate from other PERSPECTIVES – What would other perspectives say about the theory / concept? Is there a counter-argument?Before you start you need to satisfy yourself that you have good syllabus notes to work from. Although most textbooks are fine in places they have a tendency to either not give enough detail on certain topics or give too much information (which can be just as bad). The chapter on education is less well updated than the rest, but it is still good enough to get you through the specification. Banyard, K. (2010) The equality illusion : The truth about men and women today. London: Faber and Faber.

the social distribution of crime and deviance by ethnicity, gender and social class, including recent patterns and trends in crime This text book has been fully updated for the 2015 specification change – the chapter on the family option is especially good, and seems to have been more thoroughly updated than the rest. One exception is that the material on the personal life perspective is a little on the thin side. development in relation to aid and trade, industrialisation, urbanisation, the environment, and war and conflict the relationship of the family to the social structure and social change, with particular reference to the economy and to state policies The methods chapter is OK – gets a bit thin towards the secondary data material at the end. What’s nice about this chapter is that the book has clear methods in context boxes throughout the methods chapter which link to education research (some of which has even been done this decade!)Ask “How” and “Why” questions when revising and try to connect ideas (this method is called “elaboration”)
