About this deal

Work progresses on the research and publication of the main report on the villa itself, together with all the other post-excavation activities. There is more to Roman villas than just the villa itself, and at Piddington some of these other aspects — the proto-villa, the workshop, the big question mark over the Roman military phase — are now being added to the original elucidation of the Roman villa. Long may the Piddington story continue! A meta-analysis was done specifically for precognition experiments conducted between the years 1935 - 1987. (Honorton, C., & Ferrari, D. [1989]. Meta-analysis of forced-choice precognition experiments 1935 - 1987. Journal of Parapsychology, vol 53, 281 - 308). This included 309 studies, conducted by 62 experimenters. The cumulative probability associated with the overall results was p = 10-24 (that is equivalent to .000000000000000000000001 where .05 is considered statistically significant). The scientific evidence for precognition, the most provocative of all parapsychological phenomena, stands of firm statistical grounds. Hello, I count myself a bit of an expert! Having written about silent codes and the people who created them. (see " Owen Clark A Genius Forgotten") and " Moritt" both published by Arcady Press. I think it was a very subtle silent code based upon time lapse, so no verbal clues were given, but information could be transferred silently. The team has been keen to find evidence of Piddington’s Roman gardens. Their search took them to the villa’s courtyard, where they found rows of small pits or postholes, which must have been dug for planting fruit trees or supports. These were of two sizes. On the outside, there was a single row of larger pits that have been traced around all four sides of the garden. Roy argues that these larger ones were for espalier apple trees — Pliny, in his description of his seaside villa at Laurentum, notes that the apple trees were planted round the edges, and Cunliffe’s work at Fishbourne in the 1960s also identified likely espalier apple trees within the courtyard. The day finally came for liberation to begin. One night, around midnight, came the news that Emperor Tenno Heika of Japan had surrendered unconditionally. I can only imagine the wide-eye smile on Piddington's face as his secret radio ended this destroying chapter in his life.

In the end, magic acts are exactly the same as any other kind of performance: the performer must be interesting. Every performer has his own techniques for holding the audience’s attention. Magic is actually very bad in this regard and that’s why so many successful magicians are little more than comedians or storytellers. But after reading the BBC files and the newspaper cuttings, it’s clear to me that people who were not as curious as I am about how “paranormal” effects can be created, even those whose starting point was a kind of uninformed skepticism, were driven to believe in the Piddingtons’ abilities as paranormal. Not only did they trust the claims made by these personable young people, but ESP was still part of the zeitgeist in a way it is no longer. That is very true. The Tarbell Course in Magic was published in 1928. In terms of the techniques of magic, nothing has changed since that time. There is nothing you will see David Blaine or Criss Angel do that isn’t explained in those books. Enter Penn Jillette One final recent exciting discovery was that the south wall of the early Hadrianic building (no.16) had fallen outwards in a southerly direction — and that it was almost completely preserved, with the gable end laying flat on the roadway leading out eastwards from the villa courtyard gate. This gives a height of some 10.2m for this building. At about every 1.2m, this limestone wall had a levelling course of pairs of re-used red tegulae (roof tiles); because it fronted the main entry/exit roadway, one could say that this was also the ‘pretty’ end of the building. Though the archaeology of buildings is so often two-dimensional, here at Piddington we can say that we have a third dimension.

During the late 3rd and 4th centuries, the function of the building appears to change. Though there is a curious absence of small finds, such as pottery, the building still appears to have been in use. Roy wonders whether it had been given a timber floor, making it impossible for finds to be trodden in, and that detritus was instead swept out of the building, only to be revealed when the tree blew over. This drone photo (top) shows the collapsed southern wall of Building 16, with the surviving traces of its gable end indicated on the lower photograph. You be the judge” was the Piddingtons’ catchphrase, so of course the nation became a panel of judges. So too did BBC staff. As the title on McMillan’s memo shows, even he thought that what the Piddingtons did was some kind of genuine telepathy. Entertainment in the camp came in the form of concerts put on by the prisoners themselves. Some of the prisoners were former actors, singers and musicians. It was relief from the harsh regime of forced labour and the onset of malnutrition, disease and fear of death. Our annual calendar consists of our landmark practical legal training course, Piddington PLT, full and multi-day conferences and short courses, half-day CPD sessions and social events. There have been—and still are—two-person mind-reading acts that depend on verbal codes. But such a method was ruled out with the Piddingtons. There was no verbal or visual communication between the Piddingtons. As their act developed, they weren’t even in the same studio, and their supposed thought transference took place despite greater and greater obstacles, culminating in Lesley receiving Syd’s thoughts in a diving bell or an aircraft. Proceeds from all of our activities go toward our access to justice projects. Currently, these are the Piddington PLT Fund, the Piddington Justice Fund and Kaartidjin, our First Nations Legal Education Fund. Of course, it isn’t news. There is a 1989 Columbo episode that explains one permutation of it in some depth, “Columbo Goes to the Guillotine.” Is it really ugly? I don’t think so. I think that the Radio Lab people are just following from Jillette’s lead. With Piddingtons, arranging a funeral service for your loved one doesn't have to be difficult, expensive or confusing. Samples of the soils were sent away for pollen analysis but, sadly, the results were negative, as Piddington’s soil is highly alkaline. The garden was irrigated by water from the well, running through timber-lined channels leading from a tank.

But The Piddingtons weren’t, nor are David Blaine or Criss Angel — which is why I have no use for the lot of them. It certainly contributed to the continuing belief of many people, including some who had been researching the paranormal for years, that at last the phenomenon of telepathy could be said to exist. Davidson had been approached by an agent on behalf of a couple of performers from Australia, Sydney Piddington and Lesley Pope, who had had some success with their mind-reading act on Australian radio. Their agent “wondered if it would be possible to do anything with them” on the BBC. “I cannot sincerely endorse the Piddington show as a feature of long-term radio interest,” Davidson replied. How wrong he was.

What conclusions can we draw about Rhine's overall research program? By 1940, 33 experiments had accumulated, involving almost a million trials, with protocols which rigorously excluded possible sensory clues (e.g., by introducing distance and/or barriers between sender and receiver, or by employing precognition protocols (i.e., where the target has not yet been selected at the time subjects make their responses). Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the villa is its date. Originally constructed as a stone-built villa in the late 1st and early 2nd century AD, there was a disastrous fire in the late 2nd century, which also affected a detached building (labelled no.16) outside the villa courtyard to the northeast. This led to a complete reconstruction of the villa’s south wing and of Building 16.

The second segment is about “The Piddingtons”— a husband and wife mentalism act from Australia that was huge on BBC Radio in the 1950s. The story is told from the perspective of their grandson and his search for how they did their act. It is much more difficult to do real “magic” (i.e., conjuring) than fake magic (i.e., lying). What Syd Piddington exploited was the fact that if he said, “This sentence has been chosen randomly from a book, by a process involving random members of the audience and objective judges,” people believed him. There was no explanation other than telepathy for Lesley’s success. If Donald Trump says, “The election was rigged,” and you believe him, there is no other explanation for his loss of the presidency, and you are understandably outraged. Prison comrade Ossie Daltry, had once managed a west End theatre called the Westminster. In management with him was Miss Kathleen Robinson. Ossie wrote to her by airmail that should she ever need a stage director, Piddington is highly recommended for his reliability and efficiency.I have been careful not to give away the method, or methods, used by the Piddingtons, partly because they are irrelevant to the issue at the heart of this article—the human desire to believe the impossible and the way in which this is exploited by entertainers or less scrupulous people in other areas of public life. I should here reveal a personal interest in the story. As a child, I was interested in conjuring, and I used to listen to the Piddingtons in a way I suspect many magicians did, convinced that if I listened carefully enough, I would understand how they did it. Because, like all skeptics, the one thing I knew—even at the age of ten or so and even before listening to the programs—was that no paranormal abilities were involved. Because, of course, such abilities do not exist. The height of this gullibility came when one of the BBC producers, Freddy Piffard, wrote in Radio Times: Press Release: New Book Reveals Secrets of the World-Famous Piddington Mentalist Act". Magic News. Retrieved 12 June 2016. But I cannot deny the deep sense of satisfaction I felt when I read a book written by conjuror Martin Hart (2015), who discovered in 1998 some notebooks kept by his grandfather that revealed the Piddingtons’ secrets.
