Towards the end of part 4, I found myself getting extremely bored too - it became far too dense and political for my liking.

And I have to say, I preferred the two sections that were set in Glasgow, with Duncan Thaw as our narrator more than the Unthank/Lanark sections. I can't say if the world of Unthank is meant to be Glasgow (the introduction by William Boyd claims Edinburgh), but it's definitely hellish. But the illumination is sometimes so bright that it dazzles instead of revealing,” as one of the characters points out. But before doing so, he is told the story of his former life as one Duncan Thaw by a portable oracle. Gray said Glasgow Cathedral was the only location he purposefully visited to make notes about during the writing of the novel; all other locations he wrote about from memory.But it reappears frequently in European history in various forms - usually among those who take the problem of evil seriously. I found it helpful to reacquaint myself with a character like this, especially after reading and brooding over too much dark, cynical literature.

We then continue on in the world of Unthank with: Book Four, followed by an Epilogue, and then strangely… four additional chapters. He also referred to his own experiences in the media industry which he states is reflected in Lanark's numerous encounters in labyrinthine buildings with individuals talking in jargon. Their skins are often aflame with dragon scales, and their souls are in hopes of healing as well as loving. These elements amalgamate into a troubled and opaque whole, lacking any real pretence of cohesion; an entirely unique work, about as complex, original and ambitious as a novel can be.
